Our Curriculum
At Hertford Prep, we nurture lifelong learners with a curriculum designed to ignite curiosity, foster resilience and support every child’s growth - academically, emotionally and socially. We blend traditional rigour with modern learning values to prepare children not just for 11+, but for life beyond.
Our Three Pillars of Learning:
- Outstanding Academics – grounded in the National Curriculum with rich enrichment opportunities
 - Learning Habits & Skills – adaptability, curiosity, collaboration, resilience and reflection as our foundation
 - Wellbeing & Character – focusing on emotional intelligence, empathy, independence and community values

Early Years Foundation Stage (Ages 3–5)
In our carefully crafted Early Years environment, we champion each child as a unique learner. Your child will explore the EYFS prime areas - Communication & Language, Physical Development, and Personal, Social & Emotional Development - alongside Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts & Design. All activities are engaging, playful and built on positive relationships.

Pre‑Prep (Ages 4–7)
Early rigour meets creative flair. With specialist lessons in Music, Science and French, we help lay strong academic foundations while nurturing inquisitive minds. Children work in small classes with dedicated support, enjoy hands-on projects, and start developing confidence and independence. Assemblies, parental involvement, world learning and charitable themes enrich their journey.

Prep (Ages 7–11)
As children move into Years 3–6, they follow a full, broad curriculum: English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, French, Computing, DT, Art, Music, PE, PSHE and more. Classes are led by a form tutor who guides academic and pastoral development, supported by specialist teachers and collaborative learning.
Every child is encouraged to take part in:
- Weekly house meetings for team spirit and healthy competition
 - Outdoor and exploration trips, local guest speakers and residential visits from Year 3
 - A vibrant community-based ‘Opportunities Week’ in Year 6 focused on service, adventure and life skills.

Woodlands Learning Centre (SEND)
From September 2025, Hertford Prep will expand its inclusive support through the Woodlands Learning Centre. Starting with Years 1 and 2, pupils will now access full-day tailored support in core subjects. With specialist educators and a nurturing environment, Woodlands is our commitment to valuing neurodiversity and ensuring every child thrives.

Outdoor Learning
Learning beyond the classroom is central at Hertford Prep. Our Outdoor Learning programme encourages children to explore nature, take safe risks, build independence, and learn through curiosity-led, child‑centred experiences. It’s a regular, structured series of sessions that nurtures confidence and outdoor awareness.

Our Learning Habits
Guided by our five Learning Habits, children learn to adapt to change, remain curious, collaborate well, overcome challenges, and reflect on their progress. These habits become part of how they learn, act and grow - building the strong mindset needed for today’s world.
